Komsomoloskaya Pravda, o best-seller diário russo, informa que nos tempos soviéticos tais vazamentos foram controlados com rolhas de explosões nucleares subterrâneas. A idéia é simples, KP escreve: “a explosão subterrânea move a pedra, vai pressiona-lo, e, em essência, aperta o canal do poço.”
Sim! É tão simples, na verdade, que a União Soviética, um grande exportador de petróleo, utilizou este método cinco vezes para lidar com petrocalamities. O primeiro aconteceu no Uzbequistão, em 30 de setembro de 1966 com uma explosão de 1,5 vezes a força da bomba de Hiroshima e em uma profundidade de 1,5 quilômetros. KP também observa que explosões nucleares subterrâneas foram utilizados tanto como 169 vezes na União Soviética para realizar tarefas relativamente banais como a criação de espaços de armazenagem subterrânea de gás ou de construção dos canais.
